Love: A Biblical Essay written 2003

By Damien Knight

Love is Kind and forgiving, for it is said: “Love covers over all wrongs.” Proverbs 10:12. Goodness is part of love. To eat plain with love surrounding you is better than to have steak in a room filled with bitterness. Love is understanding, “He who covers and offense promotes love.” Proverbs 17:9. Many seek out love, yes even I, “What a man desires is unending love.” Proverbs 19:22. And many claim their love never fails. Yes, men might fail but love is unfailing. I choose to fill my heart with love.

Love brings life. “He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honour.” Proverbs 21:21 So I must fill myself with love. “Love must be sincere… …be devoted to one another in brotherly love.” Romans 12: 9-10 and “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Mark 12:31

What is life if I give all but have no love? What do I gain with a life of misery? I get nothing from it. What is my faith without love? It is nothing. I have the faith to do the impossible but no love, I am nothing, a husk.

What is love? I’ve heard and read this scripture a thousand times. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

I will choose love. “Follow the way of love…” 1 Corinthians 14:1 and “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 3:3 “What the world need now is love sweet love,” Hal David (song writer). Love is the one thing that conquers even the grave and so I choose love.

Damien’s comment today: I am not religious, but Love truly is something I value. Many who hold the bible sacred would do well to remember that Jesus commanded to love our neighbours as ourselves. That means treating LGBT, immigrants, and others not like yourself as you would desire to be treated. It is our sacred duty to care for each-other. This life is our only life it does us good to be kind.
