This placed him at the head of the committee. I had the next highest number, and that placed me second. The committee met and discussed the subject and then appointed Mr. Jefferson and me to make the draught.

Formal Tone: Brain Quest Assignment

Teachers Note: Bold is where student rewrote the informal parts of the essay in formal tone. Regular is the original Brain Quest book essay.
Many people believe that Socrates was the greatest philosopher who ever lived. In fact, some consider him the father of all philosophy. Philosophy is a word that originates from two Greek words, philo meaning love and Sophia meaning wisdom. Philosophy is the study of human thought and love of seeking wisdom. Socrates lived in Greece, in the fifth century BCE. There were others who studied philosophy before him, but Socrates brought philosophy to the lay-man. Prior to Socrates, philosophy was taught only in formal schools for the intellectuals and wealthy of Greece. But Socrates had a different way of teaching. He didn’t tell his students what to think. Instead he asked them questions about what they thought, and helped them arrive at the answers themselves. Socrates was also interested in the practical implications of philosophy: how it applied to regular people and in day-to-day life. That interest in the consequences of philosophy may have been Socrates downfall. Socrates was executed for corrupting the youth by teaching political philosophy and for denying the gods. His sentence was to drink a hemlock potion in a state sanctioned suicide. Even though Socrates never produced any writings his student, Plato, wrote several works about his life. Thanks to Plato and Aristotle our generation can learn about Socrates’ life and philosophy.

Holiday Story Assignment
By Jayson Knapp
Instructions: Make your own holiday story with characters and a plot that reveals characteristics about them. (BrainQuest)
Once upon a time three friends went ghost hunting, but they found more than ghosts. There were zombies, skeletons, witches, and giant spiders all in one place wanting to take revenge. They will destroy the world and make it a haunted one. The kids went into a fright and fled to tell the town. They did not believe the kids until it was too late. When the attack occurred, the town was terrified. They fled and all that was left were three brave kids turned zombies forever lost to time.
Teacher Commentary: This assignment receives a 0. I like the creativity, but the goal was to create memorable characters and you made forgettable characters. You gave them no name. They have no characteristic except for being maybe brave.
Summary of Tom Sawyer White Washing Scene
Instructions: Write a summary of the exchange between Tom and Ben. (BrainQuest Assignment)
Ben and Tom’s conversation is talking about a lot of things such as liking something such as work and making work fun. The story’s main idea is to join in something you can only do once. Tom’s mouth may have watered for the apple but he did the thing he could only do once in a while. Even with Ben wanting him to come swimming. Tom still continued white washing and looking at his job on how good it is. Ben’s way of thinking it’s work but eventually wants to join in.
Teacher Commentary: Jayson you were suppose to do it in order. Also the main idea of the story was about the line between what is work and what is fun.
Paul Revere’s Ride: Brain Quest Assignment
By Jayson Knapp
Assignment instructions translate Longfellow’s poem as a story.
On April 4th 1775, Paul Revere rode to warn people that the British were coming. He did this by telling a friend,
“If the British march by land or sea from the town tonight hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch of the North Church tower as a signal light. One if by land, and two if by sea, and I on the opposite shore will be ready to ride and spread the alarm through every Middle sex village and farm for the country-folk to be and to arm.”
Now in 2018 we still hear and teach of it and its poem. It is an important time in history the revolutionary war.
