Today We Celebrate

Today we weep,
Grieve the loss which burdens us
Today we mourn,
The empty shell which was left behind
Today we cry,
For those this year that had to die
We prepare traditional foods
Today we gather,
In honour of their memory
Today we rejoice,
In the shared lives we had with them
Today we remember,
That they have never left us and so…
Today we celebrate,
Keeping their love for us alive

To Tiffany (Nov 18 2016)

By Damien Knight

Dedicated to Tiffany Turner. My little sister who is a chronic liar and a bigot.

It’s hilarious how my life affects you
How threatened you are by my existence
You thought it was cute, share a post
Tag me and dead name me all in pretense
Act like we best friends and it’s ok
Fuck you I made clear my name is Damien!
A fiery pit of rage and stay the hell away
Post a stupid buzzfeed post with my dead name
Six months ago you accused me of unspeakable things
It’s like you have absolutely zero shame
Even you don’t do enough meth to be such an idiot
It’s so tragic how you act, short a few crayons
You had everything, a brother who loved you
Disrespected me and my identity as a man
Pretty, smart and artistically gifted
Common sense just isn’t in your wheel house
Guess that makes sense, you barely graduated
Because you spent all your time in a crackhouse
Your idiocy, dear, is your own fault
I didn’t do a thing but support you
You crave attention and my existence
Is not the cross to hang your insanity
Don’t ever act nice again on pretense
Said before and I say again, I despise you
Your lies, your personality, your malignment of me
Stay away from me and from all that is mine
Stay away, I disown you, you are not family

Time of Year

By Damien Knight

The cold bites my lungs
It burns my skin blue
Wrapped in sweaters
And buried under blankets
We fight the death of sun
And the return of winter
The leaves fall fast now
By the fireplace I knit
A winter scarf for the snow
Bound to come this year
Ghost tales play on the box
My dog barks eager for the cold
I wish to cuddle, watch shows
Play indoor games with the kids
Ah I won’t fight winter
Time with family never grows old

The Sea

By Damien Knight

The sea flows and ebbs, forward and back
The skies glimmer with pinks and reds
My daughter plays in the sand, mouth slack
Her hands thoughtful as she builds her castle
The horizon a boat speeds by waves break
My son runs along the line foot prints in sand
He charges kicks down her castle
“Daddy!” she cries and I take her hand
The sky is purple now, I gather her shovel and bucket
Her pretty strawberry head cries
“You only have eachother,” I scold, “dont forget.”
“Yes sir,” they whimper as we pack our things
The sea which was glistening turquoise earlier
Now reflected the purple black sky
My young ones at heel to the hotel
These are the memories I won’t let pass by

Hello, I am Damien, the head blogger of our family blog The Shade of Writing. We are a home-school family of writers that love to travel. We write on various topics such as education, philosophy, poetry and history. We also have a Twitter, an Instagram and a YouTube.

I write poetry and share drafts of my novel when I am not in classes at the local university. My kids post their writing assignments from their books and papers on topics that interest them. My spouse travels for his job and most of our travel and food reviews are from him. We all are open to questions so ask away.
