In June 1775 Mr. Jefferson came into congress. His writings were handed around. On the Matter I gave him my vote, and did all in my power to procure the votes of others. This placed him at the head of the committee. I had the next highest number, and that placed me second. The committee met and discussed the subject and then appointed Mr. Jefferson and me to make the draught.

Paul Revere’s Ride: Brain Quest Assignment
By Jayson Knapp
Assignment instructions translate Longfellow’s poem as a story.
On April 4th 1775, Paul Revere rode to warn people that the British were coming. He did this by telling a friend,
“If the British march by land or sea from the town tonight hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch of the North Church tower as a signal light. One if by land, and two if by sea, and I on the opposite shore will be ready to ride and spread the alarm through every Middle sex village and farm for the country-folk to be and to arm.”
Now in 2018 we still hear and teach of it and its poem. It is an important time in history the revolutionary war.

Who were the Samurai? The Samurai were the elite warrior group of Japan. The time of the samurai was the Edo or feudal Japan period, from 1603 to 1867 in Japan. Back then Tokyo was Edo. Edo was not capital Kyoto was. A samurai wasn’t just warriors but, they were also shoguns. Shoguns were commander-in-chief in feudal Japan, the highest rank.
What was the life of a samurai? When a boy in a samurai family is born, they give him a sword. It’s not a real sword, but it is a symbol of his future. A sword is more important than anything except for Bushido and his training.

Documents Paper

Question 1
The “Virginia Luxuries” Displays both a master whipping a male slave on the right and a master taking advantages of a female on the left. In the Tocqueville documents, it describes the whites as civilized oppressors of the savage natives and of the black slaves. In his observation, slaves admire their master and yet despise them. Slaves desperately wish to intermingle while natives are prideful to the extent they alienate themselves from whites. Tocqueville stated that should things continue, the natives will have died out. He stated the only recourse for blacks and whites is either abolishment of slavery and immediate civil rights or the continued existence of slavery. If slavery were abolished, he mentions that without immediate equality a civil race war would occur. It seems these predictions were accurate. Very few full-blooded natives are left and not only was there a civil war but even to this day we have race riots.
Question 2
In “The Discord,” we see the power struggle of men and women. When you look at it, it uses pants as a symbol of power. It shows how men fear women rising and taking that power. How does the Declaration of Sentiments (Document 4) reveal the nature of gender relationships in nineteenth century America? In Sentiments it describes a woman as property of man. She can not vote on law nor hold a job of her choosing if she were to wed. If she doesn’t marry, they force her to pay taxes to a government she has no say in for property that is hers. I would agree with the sentiments and the resolutions proposed. During that time period, women could not constitutionally vote. Men made law and ran for office. If it weren’t for these first sentiments, women still would stay at home while men worked.
Question 3
Abraham Lincoln disliked slavery because it was unjust and counter to the principals of liberty. He would not support equality of the races. He declared that he saw the white man as superior. I think he was playing politics. In one letter he says that even if he were to regard the races equal to many whites did not and he could not ignore their feelings. As a politician, you have to be what your voters want.
Question 4
After the war, slavery was finally abolished. Former slaves would work and vote during a brief period after without much trouble. In Government class, they even told us how one black male made it to congress shortly after. The amendments made after concerning rebels holding office after was impossible to hold up since nearly every southerner took part in the rebellion. The liberty and rights of blacks that the amendments were to provide didn’t really happen until well after reconstruction.

The History of Father’s Day: An essay on Father’s Day origins.
By: Damien Knight
The barbeque is lit and hotdogs are on the grill, kids are playing and Dad is wearing his grilling apron. It’s that time of year again, Father’s Day. You watch your dad crack a cold one and laugh about the gaudy tie your mom bought for the occasion. Then it comes to mind, how did Father’s Day get it’s start?
While Mother’s day was established in 1908, it took another 6o years…
Motivational Monday: Dr. Martin Luther King
By Damien Knight
Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While I could write about what he means to people today but his words stand on their own.
“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World
With today’s news and increased visibility of racial tensions let us not forget Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream. After all : “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

New Year’s Resolutions: A Tradition
By : Damien Knight
Before I list my New Year’s resolutions for this year, I want to give you this post. Another one of my holiday histories.
New Year’s resolutions are nearly as old as New Year itself. It dates back to almost 4000 years back to the kingdom of Babylon. Babylonian New Year was celebrated during the feast time Akitu. It was during Akitu new kings would be crowned or oaths to old kings were sworn. They also would swear oaths to their gods. These oaths often included promises to pay debts.
Tybee Island Lighthouse
By Damien Knight
This past July I went to Tybee Island, Georgia. Tybee Island is known for having one of the oldest lighthouses in the U.S. The lighthouse was established 1736. The property is beautiful with a lot of history. The lighthouse there now is 3rd building built. It has 178 steps.
We began our assent up those steps and my children were scared each set of 25. Each 25 steps there is a window showing the view. I felt out of breath after the first 50 stairs. Once I got up 75, I was certain my legs would collapse. I kept going though, and the view was worth it.
The first lighthouse on the property was a daymark. They had to replace it and the second daymark due to erosion. The current lighthouse was rebuilt from the third lighthouse at the end of the civil war. They also have 3 light keepers houses.
The lighthouse has a gift shop. We purchased smashed pennies. I was elated and relieved to have made it all the way to the top and back down. I could not walk without pain for 2 days but it was worth it.

Profiles in Courage
By Damien Knight
President John F. Kennedy was elected president in November 8 1960 against the then Vice President, Richard Nixon. Kennedy was the first Catholic and the youngest presidential candidate in history. At the time of his bid for presidency “anti-Catholicism was alive and well”, (Champion, Owen F) and for many Americans there was serious concern over having a Catholic president. He overcame this with his charisma during televised debates and beat Nixon in a landslide and on January 20th 1961. It was during his inaugural address he told Americans those famous words “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” (The 6th Street Museum, Dallas)
President Kennedy was poised to begin his “New Frontier” policies. On March 1 1961 he formed the Peace Corps fulfilling for Americans a way for them to “do for their country,” and the world. He was a cultured president who held art viewings and socialites in the white house. He was also human and prone to err like the rest of us. During April 17 1961 the bay of pig invasion was launched. A thousand exiled Cubans attacked Cuba in a failed bid to overthrow Dictator Fidel Castro. (JFK Assassination Timeline) Kennedy bravely and publicly accepted the failure. In response to this disaster Kennedy created The Situation Room to filter military intelligence he would receive. This showed he was willing to act on his failing. Soon after Kennedy authorizes 400 U.S. Soldiers to go to Vietnam.
Cyrus The Great: Document Analysis Freeing of the Jews
Written By Damien Knight
When King Cyrus of Persia conquered Babylon around 538 BCE, he wrote a decree that is often described as the first decree of human rights. The document describes the release of captives of Babylon and returning of them to their homeland. The second part of the reading is a document written by the Jews on their perspective of gaining freedom and the benevolence of the Persian king.
