Lava Tubes

Dr. Wulff Basking in an angelic glow of the lava tube skylight. These lava tubes are formed while lava is still flowing. As the surrounding outside lava cools the inner parts or the tube drains out creating the cavern. Tubes can range from 15 meters to 50 meters wide. Lava tubes have several fascinating features like this skylight Dr. Wulff stands in. Two such skylights create a bridge feature. You also get flow lines and lava-cycles. This was one of the best moments on the trip. I was very homesick and Mexican food is very much home for me. I also ordered in Spanish which rocked.

Cera’s Favourite Garnet

#wkugeology #wku #homeschoolkidslearnmore #homeschool  Here my daughter is holding her favourite silicate stone, uvarovite garnets. Uvarovite garnets are the ugrandite garnet group with a chemical formula: Ca₃Cr₂Si₃O_12.  The green in this lovely garnet is caused by chromium. It is identified by it’s dodecohedran shape in groupings of small crystal, isometric crystal system and by it’s emerald green colour. The mineral is very rare and this sample at WKU is one of few they have.
